Magical Paths Begging To Be Walked

Roads and paths pervade our literature, poetry, artwork, linguistic expressions and music. Even photographers can’t keep their eyes (and lenses) off of a beautiful road or path, which is why we collected this list of 28 amazing photos of paths.

Paths like these have a powerful grip on the human imagination – they can bring adventure, promise and change or solitude, peace and calm. There’s nothing like a walk down a beautiful path to clear your head – or to fill it with ideas!

I’ll leave you with an excellent quote from J. R. R. Tolkien’s works while you enjoy these images; “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.

  1. Autumn In The White Carpathians
  2. Rhododendron Laden Path, Mount Rogers, Virginia, USA
  3. Spring In Hallerbos Forest, Belgium
  4. Autumn Path In Kyoto, Japan
  5. Autumn Path
  6. Bamboo Path In Kyoto, Japan
  7. Hitachi Seaside Park Path In Japan
  8. Dark Hedges In Ireland
  9. Winter Forest Path, Czech Republic
  10. Path Under Blooming Trees In Spring

So I got a bee in my bonnet and went and found credits for all these. A lot of these appear on 30 Places You Should Go Before You Die sorts of photoposts, on many many sites that do not credit the original photographers, but I was tarring them with a broad brush and some of them are actually crediting people now. I apologize to the ones that are for my dark thoughts in their directions.

Picture 1: Credit to Janek Sedlar. Janek Sedlar’s DeviantArt, other links.

Picture 2: By Robert Ziegenfuss. (Of a park in Ireland, not Mt. Rogers.) His tumblr.

Picture 3: Killian Schoenberger. His Facebook.

Picture 4: Takahiro Bessho. His Facebook is all in Japanese, but here, have his Twitter.

Picture 5: Lars van de Goor, who makes it hard to link to individual photographs, so I won’t. But the autumn pictures are quite worth scanning through.

Picture 6: This is by Yuya Horikawa. More of Horikawa’s. Also, I give you a video of the bamboo forest, because why not.

Picture 7: Original. Many people also credit this to Sename777, though I can’t find Sename777 otherwise, and Nipomen2 has a repository of other photographs, so I’m going with Nipomen’s flikr page.

Picture 8: By Stephen Emerson. Not the former president of Haverford College, but rather this guy.

Picture 9: Jan Machata. He’s Czech and was 17 when he took this. (So he’s 19 now.) Guy has a future.

Picture 10: Emanuel Costinas. 500px.

Yes: I’m a sap; yes: this is treacle.  But I can’t help myself from getting misty-eyed; this is network television (FOX, for chrissakes!) and these are four young, extraordinary dancers comfortably performing in same-sex pairings.  Over the course of this season, there’s been no real indication of whether any of the four of them are gay or lesbian and it certainly doesn’t matter…and that’s really my point: this is how it’s supposed to be.  LGBT relationships are being given equal footing in the overall culture/society, up to and including silly network television, and here’s another place where some young LGBT kids may see themselves reflected and feel part of the world—instead of apart from it.

As excited as I am to see Kate Bush perform live, I’m really more excited to spend time with so many dear, old friends…can’t wait!
